Overview

Driven by FleetCor is a fleet and fuel card management app used by fleet managers and drivers. The goal was to enhance the user experience by developing new features, refining existing functionalities, and ensuring consistency across the mobile and web platforms.

The Challenge

FleetCor faced the challenge of translating their robust web app functionalities into a streamlined, intuitive native mobile app. The hypothesis was that users anticipated a simplified, lite version of the web experience on mobile, but still required access to key features. Addressing user needs, especially between different driver types (local vs. long-haul), was essential to provide a balanced experience that catered to a wide array of user requirements.

The Process

Part I

We began by analyzing feedback from user personas representing administrators, managers, and drivers to guide feature prioritization and design decisions. For the Fuel Locator feature, we conducted usability tests to understand how drivers navigated the locator, used filters, and interacted with search functionality. Insights revealed differences in needs between long-haul and local drivers, with the former focusing on route planning and the latter seeking real-time solutions for nearby stops.

Part II

The design system and style guide played a critical role in maintaining visual consistency across web and mobile. Using Sketch, InVision, and Zeplin, we developed prototypes and iterated based on usability testing results. For the Fuel Locator, enhancements included clearer filter options, improved map readability, and the addition of personalized features like Favorites. Responsive design principles ensured the experience translated seamlessly between platforms.

The Results

The redesigned Driven app and Fuel Locator feature provided a unified, intuitive interface tailored to the specific needs of its user base. The Fuel Locator improvements included predictive text for search, more accessible filtering options, and the ability to save favorite locations for future reference. Map updates improved visibility and emphasized critical information like pricing and amenities. These updates streamlined workflows for administrators and managers while offering drivers practical tools to navigate efficiently.

The final product received positive feedback from usability testing, with participants highlighting the simplicity and usefulness of the locator tool. Stakeholders praised the cohesive design system for reducing development complexity and ensuring brand consistency. Overall, Driven empowered users with a polished, efficient solution that enhanced fleet management and driver convenience.
